In Quebec, contrary to the majority of the other provinces and American states you will not find old road shields because, during the Seventies, all the roads have been renumbered . However, during this renumbering operation old shields were re-used to manufacture the new shields. The technique consisted in applying the new number on the back of the old shields, the old black number on white background was painted thereafter in gray. But, with time, paint slowly disappeared and the old numbers reappeared! This page shows pictures of these shields, increasingly rare and not yet replaced. Undoubtedly the best example of re-use of shield (back of 155 nord, 1stSt./2ndAvenue, Grand-Mère). Route 4 was the actual section of Route 138 between the US border and Montreal via the Mercier Bridge. >> Route 153 Old number found on the back of Route 197 shield, Gaspé (Rivière-au-Renard). Route 8A connected Grenville, on Route 8, to Hawkesbury, Ontario (by Interprovincial Bridge) (Actual section of Route 344) Old number found on the back of Route 337 shield, Paquette Street(?), Sainte-Julienne. Route 57 connected Montebello and Saint-Jovite, it's the actual Route 323. >> Route 337 Old number found on the back of Route 155 shield, Biermans blvd., Shawinigan (A55, km 220). Route 62 was located in Abitibi region. It connected Ville-Marie and Belleterre, it's the actual Route 382. Note also the partial re-use of the ouest/west sign for the actual arrow sign. |
